Imprisonment without a trial starts it all. The bail system is a punitive mess. The Constitution says we have a right to a speedy trial -- not to rot in prison because you cannot buy your way out. And that is before we get to the viciousness of the prison employees and inmates. He was homeless -- wouldn't

available housing have helped him?

It is all so screwed up, and I follow threads of one problem, and it leads to a tangle of other problems. You loosen one, the others tighten. But this is a sin and a shame and we need to face up and deal.

Is nobody in authority working to release all the minor / non-violent offenders - and not jail any more of them - to get & keep them out of harm's way? What's it going to take?

Friends of mine recommended voting for Labat, and I cannot remember a vote I regret more.

The jail is an embarrassment to the nation, much less the County.
